One of the first questions that arises in such an undertaking is "What are we doing with the apartment?". For some, this is certainly a very difficult question, especially if you own a home or perhaps live somewhere with an old lease and thus live quite cheaply but well. Fortunately, it was a relatively quick and clear decision for us.
After sublet our apartment on our only 4-month trip to Kyrgyzstan in 2017, we thought about it but decided against it very quickly. On the one hand, it is certainly nice to know that you would still have a base somewhere if all else fails. On the other hand, it is very liberating when you do not have to lose any thoughts about the apartment "at home".
The burden that we try to take off ourselves by giving up the apartment is mainly due to the fact that a lot can happen over such a long period of time. Of course you can sublet the apartment if the landlord agrees. But what if the subtenant quits after a year? Then you have to look for a new subtenant remotely or hire good friends / family to do so. And letting someone you have never seen in person live in your apartment for years does not really ensure the best possible relaxation on the trip.
And if you need a place "at home" because something unforeseen happens, there is always a solution, even if only for a short time to look for something new ...
